I have what looks like a smoke alarm/ carbon monoxide detector with U.F.O on the front and it is wired in to the power, it is on the wall, near the ceiling above the gas heater.
We have googled it but have come up blank, there is a little toggle switch next to it.
I have photos but cant paste them onto the message, I can email them to anyone wanting to see them.
Whatever it is, it's a retro-fit device that's been wired in. I can't make up my mind if it's complete or not (looks as if a part would clip onto the front) and although the assumption of it being a detector of some kind would be logical, doesn't seem to have a grill for the 'sounder' to emit from.
Does it 'do' anything if switched on? Get warm/hot at all? Just wondering if the gauze like bit is removeable and if it's one of those awful things that emits a smell from a scented pad when heated.
The 2nd item clearly is Al+Mel, but it's just to illustrate that the odd item in the first photo is wired into the mains (assuming the box has been used for 240v).
I've also just realised, is the first photo on it's side, i.e., needs rotating 90 degree's clockwise? If this is the case, is there a heat stain on the ceiling above the device?
I have just posted these pics in the same orientation as to which they were sent.
As for the switch terminals DaveCoaches, that's a good point, I'd overlooked the terminals not being insulated.
Given the apparent evidence of heat from this thing though, I'd reckon there's good enough reason to (carefully) remove it or at least disconnect it from further use. Personally I can't stand anything that emits heat like this, they're a risk in my opinion.
Thanks for the reply's. We are not going to switch it on, its on the 12v circuit. We are going to remove it this weekend and put a 12v light there instead, we were just curious as to what is was.

If you can tell us what the wires were connected to.
