Have just returned after a great weekend away in Fife after a long winter. Problem....no water from hot water taps. Cold water flow ok, Was fine on last trip to France last summer. I emptied the water tank for the winter. Most forums/similar problems seem to point to the likely culprit as the non return valve. Can anyone shed anymore light on this? Is there a definitve way of checking that this is the problem and how do I go about fixing. Thanks in advance of your usual helpful advice.
On the inside behind the pump inlet of my van the water goes two ways after being pumped in.One hose goes straight to the cold taps the other to the heater.I was wondering if this was the same in yours could you not block the cold feed in and take out the drain plug in the water heater thus if the non return valve was blocked no water would come out the drain hole..just a thot ?

yes sounds like the non return valve is playing up.ie.no cold water is getting into the hot tank, hence non to come out.an easy way to check is...
fill all the system as normal, ignor the fact you have no hot water at the taps.remove the outside drain plug and ask someone to switch on the pump inside.take note of the drain plug hole without plug fitted.if the non return is blocked or partly blocked the water flow leaving the drain hole will be slow.if the non return valve is ok then the water will be leaving rapidly, like the flow of a tap.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
HI, I have just the same problem, no water comes out of the drain plug when I did what you suggested above.
So how do I "find the non return valve, (water heater is a Malaga E) and how do I make it work again?
Thank you,
Jane
Thanks for advice. Water flows slowly out of the drain plug hole. Where the inlet cold water pipe splits to the cold water tap and to the tank, when the pump is switched on, water seems to flow to the tank. Can I assume the non return valve is partially blocked. The valve looks tricky to get to. Any advice on replacing it without removing the tank? Thanks again. David
Following on, with pump on, if water flow from drain hole is not forceful, rattle the tip of a pozidrive screwdriver over the tip of the non return valve which is at the other end of the drain hole.
Usually this will free it so if it does, again use the screwdiver to push the nrv shut and let go, if it opens fully again then repeat a few times and it should then be ok.
If not and further rattling of screwdriver then shutting etc fails to clear what's making it stick, then you'll need to change the cold water inlet fitting that contains the nrv.
