I am a bit confused as to what I can and cannot run without having an electric hookup.

I have an Eldis Wisp 400 / 4.

I understand that if I connect to an electric EHU I can power all my sockets, lights , fridge, water heater etc, but if I do not have an EHU what can I run just using the leisure battery.

I know I can use the lights but presumably none of the 3 pin plugs will work? I do not seem to have any other types of plug sockets avaialble.

I can run both the fridge and the water heater from gas so that is ok.

So will the leisure battery really be there for the lights only?

And the water pump. If there are no 12V sockets in the van you may need to add them if you wish to use other 12V items.

You should be able to run everything apart from the 3 pin plugs. They are 240V and require the hookup cable.

The leisure battery is to power certain items in the caravan. One most definately is the water pump and the lighting but if you have a Thetford toilet with a power flush then the battery will need to operate this too. Not all caravans have this facility as like mine I have a manual flush whereby I don't rely on battery power to flush the loo. Most caravans have a 12 volt twin blade socket which can be used by using the corresponding 12 volt plug which can operate a TV (if it has the facility for 12 volt power) or a strip light with pole clips attached to the top centre awning pole which we do when the awning is erected. The 240 volt sockets are excatly the same as what you have at home so you need a mains electric supply for these plus some caravans have two 240 volt lamps over the seating area which will only operate on mains electricity again like ours. The fridge and hot water tank can be operated by either 240 volt mains or gas but heating the hot water by gas can be quite costly as it will consume quite a lot of gas so we heat a kettle of hot water on the cooker so you only heat and use what you need. Hope this clarifies more what the battery power needs are but it will help if you purchase the Haynes 'Caravanning Handbook' by John Wickersham as it explains everything you need to know.

It is possible to run mains appliances from 12 volts, but you would need to use an inverter. This converts 12 volts DC into 240 volts AC.

It's not a very efficient way of doing things though and you would be better using 12 volt appliances.

Small inverters up to 200 watts are relatively cheap. Large inverters are available, though these cost a lot more money and will flatten a leisure battery very quickly indeed.

A 3 kw inverter for example would cost hundreds of pounds and draw in excess of 250 amps!

a 100 watt inverter would draw around 9 amps. You can get these for around £15
