Folks

Need your help the caravan in question is a lunar ultralite 500-4

The tyres need changing due to age but i have noticed the inner arches have been worn in the middle looking at the clearance when the van is down as normal there is around 15mm clearance at the leading edge

the tyres are 175 c 13" im wondering if the incorrect tyres have been fitted in which case this is way they are rubbing on the top of the arch

wheel bearings are fine no play in the wheel

im thinking about changing them to a 165 c 13 which should give me more clearance around the tyre and arch

the van weight is 775kg unladen and max weight 1000kg

any help would be great thank in advance

Change to 165/80X13C which are van tyres, they usually have load index of 94 which will be more than enough for 1000kg caravan.

Like you said it may be the wrong tires.
Through the years the weight of the van puts weight on the rubber through the axle.I read this a few years ago in a caravan book (hayes manual) They advised to jack the van up till the tires were clear of the ground allowing the rubber in the axle to take its normal state again...this may take a week or so.Hope this helps.

175/80/13C diameter = 610mm
165/80/13C diameter = 594mm

This makes the diameter 16mm smaller, the clearance in the arch would be 8mm greater. That's the same as the tread depth on a new tyre

175/70/13C diameter = 575mm
165/70/13C diameter = 561mm

The latter would increase the clearance by 24.5 mm

I don't fully understand where the tyre is rubbing? I think you mean above the tyre?
If that is correct, I think the rubber suspension is overloaded or has given up the ghost?

As a guide and with wheels on the ground taking the weight of the van as normal, the suspension swinging arms should be pointing down, or put another way and as the small hand of a clock, the offside arm should be between half past three and 4oclock.

Should it be at 3oclock, or worse! then you may well also be needing a replacement axle
