Hi,
I'm in a bit of a pickle so hoping someone can shed some light for me. I have a 1999 Bailey Ranger 500/5 which needs a new seal on the Thetford C4 cassette. Looking on the internet, most of the seals for C4 have 'for Post 2000 Thetfords'. The 2 serial numbers which seem to be popping up are 16175 & 23721. I am unable to check my current seal as the caravan is stored in France. What I did do last year was write down everything I could find on the cassette which is the following:
Thetford C4
Model - Cass C4
No. 1634262
Code - 970828
I cannot see anything that resembles these numbers, Could any of you good folk be able to tell me if the Post 2000 Seals will fit?
Thanks in advance
I know it sounds obvious and you have probably tried it but you could ring the Baileys spares people. They seem to supply everything - at a price! You can find out then get it elsewhere!
Hello. I have just replaced my cassette seal on a 1999 Challenger. According to the Thetford website I needed the part no 16175 "FOR CARAVANS MANUFACTURED BEFORE JUNE 2000".
I ordered the part and yes, you guessed it WRONG ONE. Luckily I have my caravan on my drive and saw it was the wrong seal. I then went to a local caravan spares shop and bought the other type of seal (23721). This was THE CORRECT SEAL. There appears to be some confusion as to when the seal change actually took place and this is a very grey area. If you do not know which of the two seals fits your cassette, I would take both with you to France to ensure you have the right one and maybe get a refund on the unopened wrong seal. I emailed Thetford to clarify this problem but have had no reply as yet. Good luck.
The trouble is caravan manufacturers buy their toilets from Thetford in bulk. Thetford may have changed the seal in June, but Bailey might have been fitting stocks of the old ones in August. If I recall correctly they look very similar too. Most dealers would give a refund on the unused item but ask first and keep your receipt.
