Being fairly new to caravaning I've noticed I'm
Getting quite a lot of brake squeal from my
2004 bailey pageant.
Done all the usual stripped cleaned etc, do caravan brake
Shoes go off with age?
Next stage is new shoes but can't fault the old ones
Cheers Jim
------------- The impossible we can do at once, Miracles take a little longer
if too shiny and over polished this can cause squeal.remove shine with sand paper, clean all dust off.check shoes for tiny stones compressed into the material.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I agree with michael but also you will find that you will have a shiny surface on the old brake shoe linings as well which you also need to take the shine off with smooth sand paper. Make sure that the shoes are also seated correctly in the corresponding slots at each end with no dirt in the corners as vibration cause brake squeal when the brakes are applied.
If you re having trouble finding replacememt shoes like i did send your old ones to Villiers in the West Mids, they strip them down, blast and repaint before attaching new lining material. i think i paid £9 per shoe including postage so about £40 in total. Takes about a week in total.
If it wasnt for a service like this i would have had to scrap my whole van, as repacement parts for Harrisons chassis just arent available anymore.
Our folding camper brakes squealed whenever we pulled up or braked going down steep hills. They stopped after having the brakes cleaned and serviced but started a few trips later. So far we've not had the problem on our new (to us) caravan.

How do you identify which shoes you need for your 'van?
There seems to be various / different kinds...?
Our 'van is on an Alko chassis, but there seems to be a few different sized shoes for it.
