Need help with understanding our 12v system on our Eldis explore 452. We are experiencing problems with loss of 12v after being on site with EHU connected.This seems to happen after a few days of problem free showering and washing of dishes. We invested in a new battery for the start of the season thinking this would solve it! Unfortunately after checking fuses, switches and battery connections we are at a loss as to what the problem could be. Unlike other vans we can't find any switches that say car or van. We just have a master, lights and pump switch on the main panel. regards lancastrian

Is there a charger switch actually on the PSU? Ours is hidden under the seat frame, out of sight unless you sit on the floor with the cushions up. If yours is switched off the battery will go down in a couple of days or so...

Thanks Al+Mel for your reply,we have searched everywhere for a switch as we thought the problem would be as simple as that but we cant find anything.Our van is in storage so will go and have another look over the weekend.
Do all caravans have onboard chargers? could the fault could be with the charger?

Yes all caravans have onboard battery chargers which only charge the leisure battery when connected to an electric hook up supply. You need a multi-meter to check the flow rate of the current to the battery terminals to determine if there is sufficient current coming from the onboard charger. If not then a relacement charger will probably solve the problem. However, you should have done this test first with the battery first to check see if it was holding a charge or not as you could have saved yourself some money if the battery was found to be in working order. A multi-meter costs under a tenner whereas a new battery is £80 - £100 so what I am saying is don't just go and buy a new charger thinking it will solve the problem. Do the checks first and then rule out the parts that are functioning correctly.

You should have a switch there some where.
In mine under the seat we have a what looks like a comsumer unit with trips switches like in the house.
On top of this there is a red switch which only says 12v, no on or off etc.

Have a good look under you seat.

As above take a electrical tester with you too.

Maybe take a photo to show on here, there is lots of people who can help on here.

I have a false bottom in my wardrobe with the charger located beneath it, behind the fire.

When you find the charger check if it gets its 240V from a 'kettle' type lead as they have a tendency to work their way loose and can then give the impression that the charger is not working when in fact it simply needs the lead plugging back in firmly.

We went up to the van yesterday to have a good look under the seat.I think the switch that has been mentioned is the one that says charger, lights and fridge which we always have on when on site. We then removed the plastic housing behind the switch box to try to locate the battery charger but to no avail.We did find lots of wiring with one lead with three coloured wires connected to a kind of junction box but not going anywhere and unable to find a point of connection.
Where else could I look for the charger? When we bought the van the battery had been removed could they have taken the charger too?

Trace the wires back from the battery, one of them should lead to the charger.
