I put tape on rail first when I did my lunar. Its worth considering guide pins in few screw holes as once that tape touches its sticks good. Next problem is tape wrapping round screws. I made clean holes in tape and slight lube on screws. Sure you know about cleaning any turps/whitespirit off with meths before you start.

You could offer the rail up dry with a few screws to hold it, mask up (some repairers draw a pencil line around a fitting, then mask to that) give it a final degrease or clean with Sika cleaner (both rail and 'van), then apply the Sikaflex to the 'van. The screws don't need to be super tight as the Sikaflex will bond the lot once cured. Take the masking tape off once the rail is in place, and clean up using clean cloths, white spirit and meths before the Sikaflex cures.

Seemed the logical way to me.

When you put the screws through put a drop of oil or spit on the threads, Stops the screw sticking to the sealant and dragging it up into clumps.
