IS the protective thermocouple worn out or frayed through? This prevents the gas from flowing if the flame hasnt taken properly, as in gas fires at home.

We had a similar problem and it was the thermocouple as ChrisPolly+Oscar said. In fact my DH found it had been 'adjusted' so it didn't stop the gas flowing when the flame went out. So we were quite glad the problem had occurred as it meant he found this bodge!
He got a universal one off Ebay to replace it with.
Are you holding in the gas knob for long enough. The thermocoupler needs time to 'warm up' before you let it go. After a long shut off, it can take a minute or two before you let it go. Could also be a bit of damp back there, try a hairdryer aimed at it for a few minutes.
