Hi,

I bought an Alpine Sprite 4-berth 1989 as our first caravan as it is easy to tow with my Scenic and it fits perfectly in my back garden. Nice starter van to get to know the scene before investing in a newer one.

The electrics all look sound. With the battery connected, I get the lights and water pump. However, when I connect the mains, the battery doesn't charge and the MCB trips. The fridge (3-way) doesn't work on 240v. I was told that there should be a separate 12v/240c switch but I cannot find one in the caravan at all.

Is this likely to be just a fuse? I appreciate that I am going to have to take it in for checking.

Just out of interest, is the following right to assume:

- When towing, it should charge the battery
- When towing, it would operate the fridge
- When on battery, it should run the fridge (gas is better for this).
- When on mains, it should run the fridge
- When on mains it should charge the battery

Currently, I only have battery power. Any ideas?

The fridge cannot be run on the caravan battery, only 12v running of fridge is from car with engine running although obviously you need twin electrics on car. Everything else is correct assuming modern electrics but a caravan of that age may not have a charger & fridge 240v element might have failed which might account for mcb tripping, if you disconnect fridge 240v input & then try mains & its ok then you have found your problem.

I very nearly bought a slightly later model than yours from new, but in the end bought a Sprite Europa. If I remember rightly ( it was a long time ago ) the fridge was fitted with a plug and a socket was fitted in the bed box next to the fridge for you to plug the fridge into. It might be that the fridge is simply not plugged in.

Again from memory the charger was a plug in systems unit and on one end there was a rocker switch, you need to close this switch in order to get the battery charging, if the MCB trips when you plug the electric in then this indicates that one device at least is going open circuit and it would be better for you to get professional help with this, otherwise the only way to check it is to isolate every electrical device from the mains and then reconnect them one by one to see which one is tripping the system.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Thanks.

A number of people have suggested a rocker switch but I certainly cannot find one. Probably best to get a professional in to give all the electrics a good test, perhaps they can identify the connections for me for any future diagnosis.
