Hi
I recently replaced the element in my water heater which seemed to go very well untill i arrived on site.To replace the element the two water connections had to be disconnected from the heater. The cold water feed which is just a blue elbow and the hot water outlet which is an elbow with a clear 8mm pipe coming from it that passes through the floor as a drain. Now my water heater fills and heats water but when i turn the hot tap on the water gets ejected through the small clear pipe on the hot water elbow and not through the tap..I know it must be a safety relief valve of some type but dont know why it is relieving and can i reset it etc...Any ideas ??

sounds like a faulty drain valve, you should be able to shut it off.stuck in the open possision maybe.when you open the tap you release the pressure and water drains off.

the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

Hi Michael
Thanks for your reply.
I have looked at the drawings again and the actual drain valve is on the cold water inlet side (if this is the valve you mean)So if this was stuck in the open position then surely the water would just come out of there as soon as i turned cold water tap on,if it was stuck closed then it shouldnt cause a problem i dont think.Where the water comes from is on the hot water out side just on the elbow,in my line of work we call them pop off valves which you can usually reset but i cant see any way off resetting this one.cheers

do not know which heater you have carver 2  or truma.normally the cold is fed to the cold taps from a seperate pipe and not through the heater.

I think it's the Truma and the clear pipe is to let air in to speed up draining.
It has a one way valve at the top to stop water getting out, this to work correct must face up and the pipe then bend over and down through the floor.

If it still does not work then the valve will need replacing, in the mean time clamp the clear pipe with mole grips or similar and the heater will work fine without it.

Hi
Yes its a Truma and the cold water goes direct from the pump to the water heater with a T off to the cold taps.
Arc systems i think you know what i am on about and the clear pipe does face upwards so i think a replacement is needed. Is the purpose of this clear pipe purely to assist with filling because i have a spare cold water elbow without the clear pipe, could i use this as a long term solution and just accept slower filling or could this cause problems long term.
Thanks both of you for taking time to answer.

Nothing to do with filling, it's to aid draining, so yes do away with it and open the hot taps when draining
