Not really if the tv is 240/12 volts and you have a 12v plug failing that a generator which is regulated to 240v.

The plugs in the van don't work if the generator goes down so I guess its these plugs you mean.

The 240v plugs wont but,if you have a socket for 12v it should be powered from the battery.Everything thats 12v and 240v will work when on the ehu as you have a power converter, even if no battery fitted.

What TV do you have? It's possible it maybe 12v ready if a modern LED/LCD model. Better to run directly off the 12v socket for a short period, when necessary.

For years we ran a SONY 15" TV from the caravan's battery. That used a 16 V DC input from a mains adaptor which I powered via a small 150 Watt pure sine wave inverter, it was a perfectly viable solution.

Inverters are generally not very efficient though. I know the specs on some i looked at said approx 60%. Some were less. I think the cheap can type ones that ALDI/LIDL sold were worse at 40%.

Most modern LCD sets use very little power so you'll get many hours from a fully charged battery.

As has been said if the TV can run directly from 12V you'll increase the effiency and hence run time. If not I'd expect 5hrs run time from the average 15" TV set even powered through an inverter.

Inverters can be a bit tricky. I bought one from Maplins quite some time ago, and it would not power my SKY box, when I tested the voltage, it was about 190 volts. Took it back to maplins who tested it, and they agreed with me. So they tested all the ones they had and not one of them gave out the stated 220v, money back thank-you. As Grampian91 said, inverters are not very efficient, so a 12v tele is the better way

Just to add my bit and maybe help a little.

Every time you convert from one voltage to another there is a conversion loss incurred so if the TV is able to run directly from 12v then this is the best option you have.

An average 12v LCD wants about 2-3 Amps of power so take a look at the capacity of your battery assuming a 110Amp leisure battery and this is more than capable of giving you what you want as each hour of use you will only be taking 2 - 3 Amps.

If however you use an inverter to give you 240V from your 12v battery and then have an inline power supply (similar to a laptop) which redusec this down to normally 12v for the TV you have 2 X power conversions and thus 2 lots of loss.

If your TV is not 12v then consider changing it as you may find it cheaper in the long run than messing about with inverters, heavy cable and fuses to supply them etc etc.

Remeber finally though that all the above is only as good as your Battery and if thats not up to the job then whichever you choose will be dissapointing.

Hope this helps

Best regards

Ian
