Hi All, I wonderif anyone can help me please. I have a swift lifestyle 555, I have had to live in the caravan for a year now. I have therefore been using all things in it to the max. My problem is that the switch for the fire in the wardrobe will not now stay on. I dont think it is a problem with the fire, as when I hold it down the fire does work. I have checked the room temp probe at the bottom of the fire and have tried things ike reducing the heat - I am aware the switch has been hot in the past!, it feels like the switch has gone and needs replacing...however, I am very limited with money, I know I will need an electrician to sort it out, but just wondered if I can save him some time and money by having the switch here, just dont want to do something that will not resolve the problem.

Any thought, advise welcome - and if anyone knows an electrician near York, that would be great!

Many Thanks

Which switch are you talking about holding down?

If it is staying alight whilst you are holding it down and goes out when you release it, a new thermocouple is required.

As there is mention of getting a sparky in to fix it, I think we are talking of the electric heating part of the fire?

So two possible switches that could well be 'in' the wardrobe, one and most likely is a simple 240v isolation switch, same size as a domestic light switch but with a fuse and often a red light showing it's on. This is known as a 'fused switched spur', and is well known for causing problems with this heater.
Given I'm right then a simple cheap solution would be for the electrician to remove it from the circuit by connecting the pairs of wires at the back together.

Reason is it is not actually needed and due to it being a problem, it is not often fitted nowdays. The reason it's not really needed is there is another switch in the caravans main distribution fuse board that fully protects against electrical problems.

Which leads to the second possible 'switch' this being the one in the distribution board and known as an MCB, but, highly unlikely it's this one as 'holding it down' would not get the fire working.

If the switch has been getting warm then it has had a loose connection and probably burnt out, regs require local isolation of 240v appliances so I would replace it not joint it out, they cost about a fiver.
