Hi everyone.

As of early summer last year I'm the proud owner of a 1992 Sprite Musketeer. We had two great holidays in it last year after a couple of quick repairs that were needed before venturing out in it.

This year has highlighted more in depth repairs needed where water has been getting in and rotting timber. I've found so much info here and on Wizards site that has been helping and encouraging me that I felt the need to contribute. To that end I've started a blog of my repairs which you can find at:

Blog

Not much there yet but I will be adding more over the next few weeks as my repairs progress. I currently have the toilet and kitchen removed and the back stripped bare. Hopefully what I am going through will help someon else in the future.

Nice looking van Simon, pity it needs work doing on it, just means less time to take it away this year.

Look forward to seeing your progress in the future.

Thanks, it is a nice looking van, a little tired and faded but nice nontheless.

The 'Fixed it club' is the help and encouragement I mentioned in my opening post. Inspiring, and it enabled me to see how a caravan is put together before pulling mine apart!

I'm currently working on a damp repair the full width of the rear end and have just this weekend located the last source of leaks. On to drying out and repairing soon. I'll be putting that on the blog in due course.

In the meantime another small update to the blog if anyone is interested.

Simon

Sorry to see you have had all the problems there but at least your getting somewhere with the repairs and thanks for sharing them with everyone here.

I think the main things is for everyone to see that firstly they are not alone with their problem and secondly that when you take a methodical approach and work on small areas at a time it really isnt that hard to do. The more tips and hints that get posted here help to save everyone else time too

Had the same sinking feeling too with snapping the bolts on a cascade but still worth doing as you can clean out the scale from inside the tank too at the same time.

Keep adding to the blog as your posts there will no doubt help others

Thanks Ian.

Yes I have found quite a few problems, but I'm having fun fixing them all. You are right, take on a little at a time and it should be manageable. I hope my experiences will help someone at some point. Before I got stuck in it was the fear of the unknown that had me most worried.

Another little update here.

Hi Simon,

Yep come across that too do your vents still have the mesh fitted to the rear of them or have they gone astray? If you need to replace it it is exactly the same stuff used for under the eaves of a roof fitted in plastic soffits and cheaper to buy that way too.

A tip i found for cleaning / cutting the excess mastic tape is to use a plastic knife easily obtainable from a local cafe !  Use it to trim away the excess and it wont mark the paintwork of the van.

If its cold a hairdrayer to warm first makes the stuff so much more useable too.

Nice job on the rooflight, have fun getting the old sealant off ! ?? ! How come it manages to stick so well to your hands but refuses to do the same to the van LOL

At least but the time the season starts it will all be sorted and you can enjoy a well earned cold one then whilst admiring your handywork eh !!

Thanks for the plastic knife and mesh tips.

No mesh to be seen on my vents, I didn't know there was meant to be any either. I guess it's to stop insects?

It's not been there for who knows how long so I'll cope with out it for now I think. If I have to remove the vents in the future I'll add some then.

Hi simon

Yes, the mesh is mainly for insects but also keeps a cold draught out while still allowing airflow.

Once you have been out in the Van with a cold wind blowing at them you will feel it inside the van around the kitchen area.

From memory I had about a metre of it literally for about £2.50 inc P&P which was enough to do both vents for a friends van and also replace the missing pieces on the floor vents too.

Fixed to the back of the vent with a hot glue gun.
