hi
i am new to the site and new to caravanning (upgraded from our tent). have part-exed my first ever 'leaky old caravan' for a lovely adria altea. had a look at all advice on here to try and understand her ways. am i right in thinking that the only way to use the electrics is through EU? can i use a ctek XS3600 smart charger? will this mean that the battery will be charged so that the electrics (except obviously the sockets) can be used without EU? will this effect the battery? can it be left connected...and the battery will charge when not in use? any other advice, bearing in mind that i am not too technically minded but follow good instruction.

oo and there is no zig unit to change from battery to mains etc so will this be done automatically?

If you have no mains hookup then the battery will lose charge over time. Whether connected or not.

You need mains electric and give the battery a 24 hour charge every month to keep it in peak condition.

You should have an on board charger in the van.

This will charge the battery only when connected to the ehu.

Your battery will loose charge if not connected to the ehu.

Your smart charger will not charge the battery unless its connected to the ehu and should NOT be used along with the on board charger.

Your smart charger will charge your battery if you take it out the van to use it without ehu.

Quick note. The onboard charger probably wont charge the battery to 100%.

It keeps it at a safe charge where the battery does gas off.
But enough charge to keep it going.

A good charge with a smart charger every now and then will help keep it in peak condition.

A lot of mainland EU vans don't come equipped with an on board charger or battery, if it is an aftermarket addition then it may well be equipped with a ctec charger and battery.
