Hi all ____ just moved from Hereford To Worsley Manchester --(long story)) -- Room for caravan at side of bungalow -- great --. Hooked up to mains from bungalow to keep leisure battery topped up. we are having bungalow re-wired -- don't ever try it --and came to move van Nunca, Zilch, Nothing, on board battery flat. Mover just kept trying to operate, to no avail.

One problem van is parked with battery compartment next to neighbours fence, so I cannot open it to charge battery, go on ha, ha, !!!. I hooked up thinking my Zig 2 would keep my new 110Aph on board battery charged.

Problem is I cannot check battery without cutting a hole in the top of the battery compartment from under the front bunk.

Any suggestions welcome!!!! \\\\\ta Jethroc

can you not gain access to the leads from the battery inside the van to put a meter to them, and connect a separate charger via these also?

Somewhere there will be cables going from the Zig / charger into the battery compartment so it can charge the battery as Jasie has mentioned you should be able to test the battery using these cables.

A good battery (fully charged ) without the charger on should give about 12.25 to 12.65 Volts when measured with a multimeter. Turning the charger/zig on should see this increase to around 13 to 13.8V or therabouts depending on the charger.

No increase measured = check the charger / inline fuses etc

Battery reading less than 12.25V then possibly the battery but would suggest charging first with a car charger just to make sure.

Do not use both the caravan charger and a car battery charger at the same time.

If you are able to identify the two battery cables but not disconnect them from the Vans charger / zig then they can be cut and reconnected using 30A Chocolate block connectors or similar. The cables will normally be much thicker than the rest of the Vans wiring but make sure that you are looking at the right ones going to the zig and not ones that may be going to the motor mover.

Hope this helps?

Best wishes

a fully charged battery is 12.7 volts any less can give problems. checking the battery should only be done full on as anything else could be dangerous and give off sparks.

the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

Got to say the X2 is Zigs first attempt at switch mode power supplies/chargers and a gentle attempt at that?
By todays standards it's output is limited at 13.5v and a lowly 5amps, you would then be far better of getting a more modern smart charger to fully charge your battery.

Even the Aldi/Lidl 3.6a but at the full 14.4v required charging rate, will do a far better job of looking after your battery by actually giving it a full charge!

It may seem obvious, but cut the wires one at a time. Cutting both together would be very dangerous. Even a discharged battery can give one hell of a shock. It's the amps to be wary of, not the volts!
