Hi
Just had the pre season service done on the van all is fine except slight damp readings either side of left and right front windows. The guy who done the service says the rubber seals are the most likely cause as there are no damp readings on awning rails or surrounding area. He has quoted me £140 to replace both seals. I was Just wondering is this a job I could tackle myself or should I leave it to the experts.
If that price is supply and labour i think it is reasonable and should be done correctly. If you are not confident you could do it and possibly it could leak worse than now. Click on this link you will see how they are done.http://www.bailey-caravans.co.uk/images/downloads/Bailey_Body_Shell.pdf
Hope i'm not hijacking the thread here, but i have a similar situation with my bailey ranger. Just had it serviced and found some damp just under one corner on the large front window.
I am looking to reseal myself as I feel fairly confident, but I am caught between two minds. Do I remove and reuse the existing seal and buy some of the mastic strip - cost of job £7ish or do I buy a new seal from lesure shop direct - cost of job £43.
The main difference would be the position of the mastic if I reuse the seal the mastic will be in the window reveal as in the following Link - Alan Parker seal repair
When i had damp at bottom of a window, as the van was at home and i could connect on electric i used a Halogen heater on low setting 400 watts and stood it about 15 inches away from wall board and that dropped a 56% reading down to 15% after putting it on 3 hours a day for 2 weeks. I had it on a time clock so it came on each morning at 3am whilst on cheap rate tariff.I put matchsticks under rubber inside so it held lip out up allowing air to get underneath
So, after work I put a tarpaulin over the front to try and eliminate further damp ingress from the rain.
I then took some readings to monitor against and recorded them. I have setup a little fan heater on a low setting and like yourself will allow to run a couple of hours a day to help dry out.
