Hi, my c4 picasso has rear led tail lights on a canbus system. I have fitted a ryder bypass relay for the 7pin towing electrics. All the lights on the caravan work when connected to the car but when the indicators are on with the tail lights, the tail lights go slightly dimmer every time the indicator lights are operated. I have tried 2 new trailer lighting boards and they are doing the same. When the caravan/trailer lighting board is not connected the cars lights work perfect. Thought it was a bad earth so had an auto electrician test it out. He renewed all the earth cables and tested power supplies to bypass relay. Although this made no difference he did suggest that because the tail lights were led's and the trailer bulbs were 12v bulbs this might make a difference and i might require a can bus relay to be fitted. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If your car has a canbus system which most cars have these days then the only solution is to have a Citroen dedicated wiring trailer loom fitted which will be a 13 pin trailer socket which replaces the former twin 7 pin electrics. Because of the complex computerised electrical system, trying to fit non conforming electrical parts such as incorporating a non dedicated relay it interferes with the vehicles engine management system which in turn is rejecting the non conforming part. I had exactly the same problem with my Volvo to which I initially had 7 pin twin electrics fitted, but after having several minor faults which progressively got worse I had to have a dedicated Volvo 13 pin wiring loom fitted with a 13 pin to twin electrics adapter fitted. Although it was costly to have this fitted it did finally cure any electrical problems.
