hello!
the sun has finally allowed us to start work on our little sprite cadet. it really did get wet in the winter, still trying to locate leaks!!! Anyway, stripped back the internal walls and insulation - I'm assuming this is just glass fibre, does anyone know if anything different has ever been used, had a slight worry that asbestos might be in there somewhere because of it's age!! Anyway, some of the frames need replacing as well as the insulation and the internal wall panels - whats best product for insulating and whats best thing to use for internal walls??

It's unusual to have glassfibre insulation. Normally it's expanded polystyrene. The reason for this is the wall construction on a caravan is a composite sandwich of aluminium skin, polystyrene and then ply wall board. All of which are bonded together to make a strong but extremely light sandwich.

Glassfibre would have no strength but it is often used in the roof which doesn't require the same rigidity.

Before composite construction was adopted fibreglass was the norm.

Good plan to update though as the fibreglass settled to the bottom of panels, leaving no insulation at the top!

Glass wool insulation holds damp so don't put more in. Use sheets of polystyrene foam of correct thickness. You can buy the faced internal wallboard used for caravans. You local caravan showroom may stock it.

Or buy 25mm thick Kingspan/Celotex 8' x 4' insulation boards from your local builders merchant. Usually faced with foil both sides. Easy to cut/handle/glue.

Have used it loads now. Did our front room (very old house). Used 50mm version. WOW. What a difference! Did a spray booth where I used to work. Have done one wall of my garage with the 25mm stuff. Really makes a difference.

You can even buy it bonded to plasterboard or marine grade plywood. Plasterboard is not much use in a caravan though!
