Hello there,

I've just bought a 7.5t horsebox and am wanting to put a living area in it (for humans not horses) and as it is basically the same as a caravan interior I wanted some advice (or links to advice) on where to start with regards the electrics!

I was planning on putting a 12v fridge in and a grill/hob as well as some lighting, but I haven't a clue on what I need to do to rig it all up? I'm not bad on doing manual stuff such as boarding it out but am relatively new to this kinda thing. I am presuming it is relatively easy as you simply use 12v fridges/lighting but from there I am clueless! I am also skint so need to do it myself

Oh and if anyone knows where I can get the old style metal framed sliding windows I would be very grateful too! I've found some on ebay but most are the plastic double glazed ones and are no good.

Thank you in advance!

A 12v fridge is only run on 12v when towing with the engine running.

The rest of the time it needs gas or mains power.
Unless you have a huge bank of batteries it will drain then very quickly.

Lookout for older caravans for sale. You may need to buy a whole one and remove the windows.
Ebay or caravan breakers etc.

If you want to fit a cooker then it will need to be properly plumbed in with copper gas pipe & gas bottle locker with ventlation through floor. If you want a 12v fridge it will have to be portable compressor type which cost several £100s & these will only run for about 3days on battery without charging.

As pointed out, your best bet is to buy old caravan & use bits but fridge might not be that good. Caravan fridges are 3way absorption type & only work on 12v while vehicle is driving, engine running. Standing still on site they work from mains if you have mains hookup or gas if you don't.

If you have no idea about gas/electric installation you will have to get help on this because installed appliances have got to be done properly & fridge has to have external vents. I guess you want to park without electric mains hookup so you will need to run 3way fridge on gas.

One thing to check before you start on electrics is the battery voltage. Many trucks have a 24 volt electrical system. This isn't a major problem, but it is something you need to take account of.

Get hold of a compressor fridge, and a good 110ah leisure battery, and fit a split charging system so that you don't drain your starting battery when using the fridge, lights etc. If you are anywhere near me (East Herts), I don't mind taking a look and could advise. I have fitted fridges and electrical systems with split-charging in the boats I have owned.

-------------
Best Regards,
Colin
