Hi,

I am going to buy my first caravan, and it looks like I will buy abroad, as the dealers here won't import the right model for me. I have been told that I will have problems for the electrics and the gas.

Electrics: where is the problem, apart from having to use an adaptor? Will I have problems at the point of servicing, and if so, why? If I was a tourist on holiday here with a problem to my electrics, somebody would surely have to sort it out!

Gas: I have been told that the gas connector is different to the british one. Once again, does anybody know what my problem would be? At the point of servicing, and if so, why? Or is it that I couldn't connect a british gas bottle? I was under the impression that gas bottles are refillable, so couldn't I just keep refilling a continental bottle?

Any help would be gratly appreciated, as the information I got from the dealers I have been in the UK are very confused (I got the feeling they don't like people who buy abroad, BUT they are not willing to get one for me!!).

Many thanks,

Stephen

Some cylinders are user-refillable (Gaslow springs to mind) but most (Calor etc) are exchangeable.

If your 'van has a 30mb fitted bulkhead regulator I imagine you'd only need to change the "pigtail" (the high pressure hose between cylinder and regulator) for one suitable for the type of UK cylinder you intend using.   (Or if using a cylinder-mounted regulator these are also available according to cylinder type.)

One or two questions you perhaps ought to ask yourself.
Who will deal with any warranty claim?
Can I easily get spares?
Has the caravan got a 12volt system?
Can I live with the door on the wrong side which is awkward on some sites?
Gas shouldn't be a problem as explained above.
