Hi & welcome to the forum.
Often each gas ring has a thermocouple close to the gas flame, this means it can't leak gas accidently if nudged on, it will cut the supply off as soon as you release the knob until it gets hot. It looks like a little metal pin next to the gas jets. (not the one for the igniter) Do you have a maker's name?
