Hi,
here I am again. As the Dusseldorf show is fast approaching I decided to enquire with two of the three Fenst dealers in the UK about servicing a caravan bought on the continent. Well, they don't want to know about it.
Does anybody know if this is "legal"?
I spoke to somebody at Fendt in Germany last week and he told me that the caravan (if I was to buy it abroad) can be serviced at any Fendt dealer. Can a dealer just turn his back like this?
What if I was a "continental" tourist on holiday here and needed some work done under warranty?
Has anybody got a Fendt (NOT double axle and not bought here, where there is no choice of them, unless you are willing to tow something at least 8m long?)?
By the way, any ides if Hobby or Hymer dealers would be as "helpful"?
Thanks in advance for anybody who can help.

I assume any dealer can decide who they deal with? They could put forward the argument that Fendt caravans made for the German market, are, in equipment terms quite different to what they sell as a UK version. I suspect also dealers in the UK are not full dealerships in the way they are in Europe. Also they don't want to encourage people to buy in Europe!!! On the other hand most caravan chassis and running equipment are fairly standard so you will be able to find a mobile service I would have thought. I think in Germany they are only serviced every two years so you could always make a bit of a holiday of it and take it back every two years.

If there are Fendt dealers in the UK, why not buy from them and solve your problem ?

It is certainly not illegal for a dealer not to trade with you.  They can buy and sell their goods and services from whom they choose.

There will be many UK dealers who will only service caravans bought from them so I would have thought that a mobile engineer would be your best bet.  Spares may still be a problem though.

Nearest Fendt dealer to UK is Decuyper in Belguim, little more than an hours drive from Calais. They speak English. Otherwise go on Fendt website & search dealers in whatever country you want & phone or email them. If they want your business they will speak to you in English.

With low € you should get cheaper than UK, you pay vat at local rate though & warranty may only be good in country of purchase. It depends on manufacturer & dealers, unlike cars there is no EU legal requirement for caravan warranties to be honoured outside country of purchase.

This website to search dealers in whatever country you want.

Thank you Billy. Bought a Hymer after all, also taking advantage of the good exchange rate!
