Hi I have a 2001 swift conquror 640 lux on a recent holiday whilst conected to ehu the 12v awning light was left on over night and the battery went flat? i belive the charger has packed up as i disconected the battery and had no reading on multi meter across the battery leads. i have checked all fuses and rcds (fridge and charger on same rcd fridge working ok) we had not used ehu for a couple of years as stayed on site and used 80watt solar panel which worked fine even use ind tv at night, since ehu trip have had weekend on solar panel but system drains down fast battery was new aug last year. is the charger built in to elecs panel or hidden elsewhere i have hotwired a rac charger from argos in at mo but not sure if this will do the job properly any help or advice please thanks in advance trev
The onboard charger detects how much charge is in the battery but it's designed to charge at no more than 90% of the battery capacity to avoid gassing of the battery. Therefore if you have hotwired a standard battery charger which is not the right toool for the job then it could possibly do some damage especially if the battery isn't holding a charge which could cause the battery to explode if it doesn't cut the full current before reaching a 100% charge. You need to replace the onboard charger with the same rating charger if the original one is defective which seems to be the case after you have checked it with the multi-meter.
ok thanks i have been trying to find out if the charger is built into the control panel which i think it is next question i have seen various caravan chargers/transformers as after fit which looks a simple job to fit but how do i disconnect the defective chrger or need i not worry i have a esm 2000 built into the van with all the fuses and 240 rcb,s if i fit a retro fit charger shall i go straight onto battery? thanks in advance
