Hi Folks. First post on this forum in a few years. We had a few years away from the caravan scene and just last weekend bought a '93 Fleetwood Garland 148-5 in excellent condition. We have it away this weekend for the first time. Everything's working perfectly except the gas.

To be fair, we won't have need for the gas much, but I like to know that it's working in case we need to cook something in the grill or oven. The previous owner maintained the van very well, but mentioned that he didn't trust gas at all, so never used it in the van. He said he did check it was all working when he first got the van, but never used it after that.

I took the gas bottle out to weigh it to see how much gas, if any, was in it. It's a 4.5Kg blue Butane gas bottle and it weighed around 9.5Kg, so should be pretty much full. I connected the bottle to the regulator using a spanner to tighten the regulator on to the bottle fitting. However, when I open the gas bottle fully open then turn 1 of the rings on the hob, I don't hear any gas coming out or smell gas. There are 3 red 'taps' on copper pipes in a little compartment next to the oven that look like they are gas isolation valves or something. They seem to have 2 positions. Either vertical (and the taps seem to lock into place in this position) or horizontal (and the taps seem to have a lot of free play in this position + seem quite loose in this position). I've tried all 3 taps in both positions, but still don't seem to get any gas at the hob.

Are there any other valves for the gas system in the van that I'm missing or anything else I need to check? What position is 'open' on these taps?

I'm assuming the 3 taps are for heater, water heater and oven/hob/grill. Would that be correct? If I get the gas working, it should be easy enough to identify which tap is for which system just by process of elimination.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Morning BIG DOGG.
Trace the gas pipe from bottle to the isolation valves. If there is another valve/tap you will find it and elliminate this possible cause.
If no more valves/taps then check that the regulator is working. Is gas getting through the regulator?
It is quite possible that the regulator has failed over many years of non-use. Check this by dis-connecting the pipe at the delivery end of the regulator and opening bottle valve. It goes without saying that if you are in any doubt then call in an expert for obvious reasons. Usually, if the gas isolation valves are in-line with the pipe then this is the ON position. Good luck.
