Hi, we have just brought our first caravan, a 1982 sprite major, the electrics are a little home spun and I plan to redo them, would it be sensible to ditch the TP2 and get a new charger? It is wired direct from the ehu into the tp2 no fuse! I only need the 12v to run the water pumps and lights. Thanks in advance from a newbie.
In the past i have seen/had vans with no breakers or fuses. Hookup cable connects to socket on the van which is then wired directly to the internal sockets.
It seems acceptable back then. The hookup points had circuit breakers so a belts and braces approach i guess.
Waterpump and lights on 12v should be OK with an 8amp charger or better.
Thanks, no there isn't a breaker, I have brought one off of ebay to fit is there any charger to be recommended and maybe a site to get them from as I think some things on ebay seem to be a little pricy.
Proper caravan chargers are designed to be on 24/7 and keep the battery at a floating charge to prevent the battery gassing which boils off the water in teh battery.
Modern chargers can do a similar thing. But they will charge it fully before dropping to a floating charge. They may not like being used 24/7 though.
Some are chargers and power supplies, But even so i recommend having a battery to stabilise the voltages and prevent peaks and drops, Whilst giving you some back also if there is a power cut.
