Whats the best sealer to use on the front seam [the one above the window] as iam going to take the trim off and re seal it, iam new to this so any tips would be good to, cheers.
It its an older caravan & its a job you only want to be doing once the the strongest permanent setting stuff you can use is polyurethene(PU)adhesive/sealant. Brand names such as Sikaflex512, Tigerseal etc. Caravan shop will probably stock it but usually the dearest, boat chandlers also stock it. Check sell by date on cartridge.
You can use IDL99 or Sikaflex that latter being the best but dearer.
Take the ends o`f the trim off then the screws of the trim its self.Clean both the van and the trim with white spirit to get rid of old sealer.
On the van where the screw nails go,run a bead of sealer from one end to the other,Now run a line of sealer from both sides of it inside the breadth of the trim. You should have 3 lines of sealer.
Now fit and screw the trim on and leave for 10mins then screw up again, this will force sealer out to create a seal..
Thanks for the reply Ludovine, the van,s 6 years old and iam getting a damp reading of 42% but only in a very small area above the corner of the front window, i think it may be the front seam that needs redueing, i want to have the right gear to do the job before i take the alloy strip off, i,ll order some 512 and get on with it before winter sets in .
Hi just another tip when cleaning the trim with white spirits use some methelated spirits after to get rid of the residue left by the white spirit cheers Stan.
