Recently bought a caravan which came fitted with Towsure Movemaster motor movers. These had beeen working OK but yesterday a problem developed as one of the movers would not engage onto the wheel when the actuator bar was operated. Have spoken to Towsure who advise that as they are 2yrs 3months old they are out of warranty.

Don't want to bin these unless I have to and so any advice on where to start looking for the fault would be appreciated.

Thanks

Does it have a crossbar to move both at the same time from one side? Is that the issue?

Rust and dirt on the mover preventing it from engaging?

There is an actuator cross bar but it doesn't matter which side you operate the actuator from the mover on the near side will not engage. I assume there is sum sort of ratchet\cog mechanism which the actuator is not engaging with on the fauly one, but not sure how to gain access to check and whether this will necessitate complete removal of the mover?

As Birdman says check the roll pins on both sides, then dis connect the cross bar and try the faulty side on its own.

OK thanks, the caravan is in storage and so will get down there at the weekend and try what you suggest. Can the shear pin(s) usually be replaced in situ or will the offending mover need removing to change the pin(s)?.

Yep, just remove the end cap on the affected roller and slide the roller out, obtain a couple of extras in case it happens again.

As i understand the question, it is the mover is not engaging onto tyre, not the roller failing to turn.

The old pin will be able to be knocked out as long as with the hole in the actuator is in line with hole in the shaft, which should be in the adjusted off tyre position.

Made a few calls today and now have a little more information. The Towsure model is UT203 which was made by a company called Unipart, this model was also marketed by another company as the Titan 1. Towsure have told me tha Unipart recently changed hands and no longer support these units.

As well as Towsure I have also spoken to NVS (Autofix) who fitted the unit and neither company can supply spares or suggest a source. Their prognosis seems to be that it is a problem with the worm drive that winds the unit on to the wheel.

Will report back at the weekend when I've had chance to remove the offending mover for inspection.

Yes, you have to wind it on by hand

So if you have the model that winds on you will find it is the same as the original Enduro EM103.It could still be a pin sheared on the bevel gears that drive the shaft or it could be the threads in the brass nut worn. When i bought mine 7 years ago i fitted grease nipples on it from new so as to be able to lubricate the nut and it was still fine when i sold van 18 months ago.But without lubrication, if it has been wound on extra hard each time,it may be the threads gone and as the model is now obsolete you may have to bite the bullet and replace it.

Thankfully I managed to fix this yesterday without the need for parts.

The two cogs which operate the worm screw which move the mover forwards & backwards were not engaging with each other on the faulty unit. This was caused because that mover had been unwound too far and so the worm screw was effectively pulling one cog away from the other. Once I had the mover off and sussed the problem it was just a case of releasing some of the tension in the worm screw screw by carefully unwinding the cog attached to it using a hammer and a block of wood to rotate it. Once some the tension was released the two cogs meshed together and the mover could be would on & off the wheel. I have adjusted the position of the mover on the chassis to try and prevent this happening again though now having worked out what the problem is I could probably fix it again without the need to spend 4hrs removing and replacing the mover.

I should say that I did not buy these Towsure movers but that they were on our caravan when we recently acquired it, however I have been gobsmacked that a costly item only 3 months outside of a 2yr warranty should be considered obsolete by the vendors with no parts back up provided for post warranty repairs.

A big thanks to all on here who offered help & advice

Rich

Glad you are sorted, it is for the reason of non spares availability why i left mine on van when i traded it in.On new van i fitted a powrtouch which is British made, not in the far east, and has an excellent spares back up if required.
