Hello all,

Last year i purchased a caravan to use when i work at festivals, its nothing fancy but very old.

When i bought it i was aware the rooflight/vent in the toilet was missing, and never got round to sorting it out in time before i left.

Is there a way to safely just cover it over? I never use the toilet bit as I use the onsite facilities so im not too fussed about putting a vent back on it. So is there an easy and cheap way to cover and seal it?

My other roof vent in the main section is fine apart from a drip that comes through the handle, when you pull down the little nobbly bit comes away from the main section, can this be fixed by simply adding some sealant too it?

Sorry for what could be silly questions, but i am complete newbie to this and only bought the 'van as i was sick and tired of sleeping in a tent!

If you just want a bodge then glue a sheet of thin plywood over the hole & paint it. Use a top quailty exterior grab glue like Evostik Serious Stuff or you can use PU sealant such as Sikaflex512.

If the leak in your other rooflight is just coming through the seal then you might fix this by just cleaning the mating surfaces. If it needs sealing around the outside roof joint then Sikaflex is stuff to use.

Wont they plywood eventually rot though?

Inregards to the other rooflight its not leaking through the seal, just through the handle itself..

Provided the plywood is painted then it will last the life of the caravan & is the cheap, easy solution you requested. Your alternative would be to fit a whole new rooflight.

As for your leaking rooflight then the water must be coming in from somewhere on the outside so you need to locate that leak & seal it as suggested.

I have decided to replace the vent properly! I have measured the trim that is on the inside of the old vent, and it measure's at 1ft x 1ft (30cm x 30xm)

A quick google and everything seems bigger, have i measured the wrong part, or do i just want to be measuring the actual hole itself?

If you are buying complete new vent including frame, size of actual hole in roof required will be specfied. Some roof lights, MPK for example have not changed in 30yrs so you might be able to get just the cover to fit existing frame.
