I have just had our caravan through its second service by a mobile Approved Workshop. What I found was horrifying. The service engineer removed the brake hubs and they were full of brake dust as were the brake parts themselves. He was adamant that the brakes could not possibly have been serviced last year by the main dealer on its first service. Also, when the van was new I had them fit a clip-on gas bottle connector and hose. The hose was out of date at the time it was fitted and was also illegal due to its length! To add insult to injury, he pointed out the spliting sidewalls on my tyres, that have probably covered less than 1000 miles in the last two years. This was down to the complete trash fitted by Elddis as original fitment.

Anyway, eTyres fitted two new shiny boots to the caravan today, all nicely balanced. This is the second time that I have used them, once for the car and now for the Caravan and can thoroughly recommend them, as I can Chris from Kiwi Leisure Services in Harrogate who was so thorough in the service it made my eyes water. The guy is brilliant and missed nothing. As for my main dealer, hell will freeze over before I drag my house on wheels over to High Peak in Derbyshire again!

Horror stories about Caravan Dealers and absolutely diabolical servicing are still very common.

While the annoying part is that if they are Members of the Approved Caravan Workshop scheme and you complain you get absolutely NOWHERE.
You don't even get a reply from the miserable shower of 'Bxxxxxxs'!

I had a similar experience where the brakes were incorrectly adjusted which nearly led to disaster coming down a hill when smoke started pouring out of both drums, due to incorrect adjustment during a routine servicing.

With the excellent help from the Axle Manufacturer we got back to the UK and the brakes were sorted out by myself with the help of the Axle Technical Support Engineer.

I now do it myself which is not rocket science or difficult as I then know it's done properly while for the last 4 years we have had no further problems and the caravan has run as sweet as a nut!

At least with a Mobile Service Engineer you can watch and check that what is supposed to be carried out is actually happening if you cannot or don't wish to DIY.

"1000 miles in the last two years"

interesting that because the low mileage should not have created that much brake dust anyway..

caravan services are odd in the fact that they are not mileage governed simply yearly..

i think they are more "check overs" than actually doing anything.. unless a high mileage is covered there would be nothing to actually service.. it should all come under general user maintenance..

brake should not need anything doing to them after as little as 1000 miles.. in fact they should not need anything doing to them after much more than that..
