Hi all. We have had a basic check and service to 1997 Crown Crest we bought a couple of years ago. The caravan is pretty much in pristine condition. Even the serviceman is impressed with it. Said we could easily get another 20 years out of it.

But he did discover a gas leak when he turned on the caravan heater, which he isolated and told us not to use. He doesn't do this type of job as he is a mobile worker (his retirement job) and performs checks and simple service on site.

I have RA and need heat. We do festival camping which means no electric hookup.

How much is it likely to cost us to repair or likely replace the gas plumbing from the bottle to that heater? We'd like an idea before we actually take it into the only repair place we know which is where we purchased the caravan.

Thanks in advance for your ideas and advice.

All depends on what is actually leaking if its rubber pipe or copper if its a union that's leaking it might just need nipping up or a leak on the heater itself ..

You'll be better off finding a local gas safe plumber than paying caravan workshop prices who often subcontract gas work out the gas safe website has a search and shows local gas men and their qualifications ( it shows if they have a lpg caravan ticket.....)

To make it cheaper empty the van and lockers and expose any gas pipes before the plumber comes to save on labour

You can check all joints, clips rubber pipes etc with the gas supply on and brush on a solution of soapy water, then watch for bubbles.
You may only need to tighten a jubilee clip or tee piece.

I would very much doubt that your gas pipe needs replacing. As previously stated my money is on a leaking joint which will brobably just need nipping up. Obviously, in any doubt then call in a gas fitter. Dont Panic! Good luck.

Hi all and thanks for the replies. The man who serviced the caravan has the LPG ticket. He said something was rusted. Will get husband to ask again specifically what we can do about the heater.

If the heater is a Carver 1800 I remember Gary from Arc saying that the 2 short pipes rust out under the heater See his post in this thread: Link
