How easy it expensive would it be to fit an external socket. Had a good look under our van and no external socket.
There are two 3 pin 240 volt sockets inside the can but not on the door side.
The fuse box is on he door side so there has to be 240v on that side.

Sorry to hijack the thread but what type of cable do you use with your external socket? We have a standard 3 pin socket on the outside of our caravan but the thought of a household extension lead in the awning sounds like a no no. I think we need a lead with RCD but I'm unsure which. Any thoughts?

There should be an RCD in the caravan which will protect the external socket. No point in duplicating it.

Thanks Saxo. Yes there is an RCD in the van. Makes sense.

Hi there, you can only use IP rated sockets on the external of the van .The domestic 3 pin type usually have a hinged cover to go over the plug if they are IP rated.
The best cable to use for mechanical protection in an awningis called SY ,All electrical wholesalers sell it. It has pvc double insulation then a steel braiding over the pvc then another pvc layer over the braiding not too expensive and easy to install and flexable.
Hope this helps ......GCB

I fitted a 3 gang socket with build in RCD to my EHU so I could get an external socket in the awning as I did not want to put a hole in the side of the van. Just another way around the problem.
