The plug bit of out Truman pump is very stiff to put in and take out of the socket. I'm worried we are going to break something. Can it be 'greased' of some kind, to make it easier to remove and push in ?

Spray it with silicone lubricant. This is non oil based lubricant for plastics. Find it on the shelf at Halfords with the other spray oils.
