Hi to all, I have just renewed my trailer brakes and completely overhauled drum backplate etc but the brakes are still binding. Also should I be able to turn the wheel in reverse when jacked up as they are auto reverse and I thought maybe they should lock without the draw bar being pushed back. The wheel turns by hand much easier backwards with virtually no binding!
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards to all.

Maybe the hand brake hasn't been adjusted correctly.
Also, did you apply copper grease to lubricate the back edges of the brake shoes etc. on re-assembly as this helps to stop binding and brake squeal as well?

Not too sure about brakes but could it be anything to do with the tension in your brake wire.

Did you adjust the brakes as per the instructions given by Alko? The temptation is to set them up taking all the play out of the system and this is not what they require. Have a look at http://www.al-ko.co.uk/edit/files/handbooks/overrun-braking-system-handbook.pdf

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

We had a similar problem and discovered the handbrake was not fully off, even though it 'looked it'.

So got right underneath and made sure the second time...

Found that the 'hammer' behind the draw tube was in the pushed back / brakes on position, even when the hand brake was down /off.

first of all check handbrake linkage and ensure its working correctly but I think you will find they are just over adjusted, if you look at the back plates from underneath the caravan there is an arrow with a slot if you put a screwdriver in the slot you will feel a little star wheel push it in opposite direction of arrow slightly just a notch or two to slacken off brakes, when adjusted corrected you should feel / hear the brakes ever so slightly when rotating the wheel forwards
