Just had the same problem on mine. New handle was about £7 direct from the Al-Ko website.
The old one was quite difficult to remove because the end of the thread seemed to be damaged.
Once out the new one simply screwed straight into place.

They flatten the end to stop it falling out if it ever unwinds itself, and they do, I know!
It can be easier to wind it in and cut the last 10mm off or grind it down with a dremel or similar.
