Im going to replace the carpet in my van, noticed the original carpet and vinyl has at some point been cut out around the furniture and in its place just a newer carpet only installed, no new vinyl, so under the carpet is the pky floor of caravan.l
The original factory carpet has a black felt type underside and the newer carpet laid has a hessian type underside.
My question is, obviously im not going to replace all the old stuff as i would need to pull out all furniture to get to it, but instead leave it in place and just remove the newer carpet use that as a template and install brand new carpet, so which backing is best for a van?
I have read the felt type backing holds moisture, but it was felt type in original factory fit over vinyl floor!
Should i lay a vinyl floor under carpet depending on carpet backing??

Have you considered a hard wearing gel backed carpet at all?
I think this would be a good insulator between the carpet and wooden floor actually and was thinking of replacing my carpet next year with it but unfortunately mine is green which is a colour which is not in much demand at present so not many shades to choose from.
Other than that I would just use a Hessian type carpet.

I was told by a carpet fitter recently to fit a hessian backed carpet on my caravan and stick it down with a spray adhesive, I now intend to replace the carpet in the toilet dressing room compartment with a vinyl floor covering the same stuff they use for house toilets, kitchens etc, it's quite thick, called cushion floor, has anyone done this?

Yes we did exactly that earlier this year. Took out the original dusky pink carpet and replaced with an off cut of vinylnwhich cost £10. Very pleased with the result, much brighter and cleaner.

We bought a carpet 'offcut' but made sure by taking the 'free standing carpets' with us that we could get all the pieces out of the 'offcut' which we could.

After using the 3 old carpets as templates to cut out the new ones we then took them to be bound along the edges and now have a re-carpeted caravan for a fraction of the cost of buying a set of dealer supplied carpets.
