I am working to install a car stereo in my caravan, i am using the 12v downlights as my source for power, i have got an earth feed, but i have tapped into the positive power but when i switch the light on the stereo power is lost. On the back of stereo i have linked the black wire to earth, yellow and red wires i have put to the power for light. What am i doing wrong, i should be able to power stereo and habe light running at same time. I have a sterling eccles 1999 model which does not have wiring in place for a radio. Can someone assist.
Probably power wire is too thin so insufficient current with lights on as well. It should not be difficult to run a length of fairly thick, ie 10amp automotive cable, direct from leisure battery + terminal to radio. Put an inline fuse in cable near battery terminal.
The power source for my stereo radio/CD comes from the 12 volt lighting but comes direct from the switch so you can use the stereo without having to turn on the lights.
do not tap into lights for power.you must get power from the main supply.some car stereos can take a good few amps so you run the risk of melting the lamp wires. The lower the voltage the higher the ampage. If you dont really know what you are doing i would get a pro in.Might just save you from fire
