I've always wanted a caravan since I was little. My happiest childhood memories are when our house was renovated and we stayed in a mobile home. So when I turned 40 I bought a 1991 lunar sunbeam caravan for my birthday.
It was 500 and has gas elec hot water and toilet and shower all working I love it
I knew it had damp but my 2 boys and I have had 8 outings and now I know I need to tackle it, I bought the materials to re wallpaper but ended up ripping it apart literally as the wall was so badly damaged with mould under the wall paper
I took out the bunk bed and seat fittings and found the damp was much worse than I imagined. The kids sleep in this part so I had no choice but to take at it.
I pulled back the lino and the floor apart from this section is dry and sturdy.
But look at this corner, its disintegrating in the corner but the rest is hard hard but black and wet all the rest is fine.
The wood strut is rotten and fell apart at the bottom but the rest is ok.
I don't want to take the top cabinets down as they are holding up the ceiling and it will effect the sturdiness.
But I need to replace 3/4 of the wall can you see the picture below, im keen to know your advice on whether its ok to do half a wallso the top cabinet above the bunks can stay in place , I have ripped everything that had black rot.
Behind is polystyrene and glue stuck to aluminium, should I leave it and just do lining and replace bad sections of strut or should I keep going till I'm.bsck to aluminium,
I'm not a tidy diy er but needs must!
I do think the 1st thing to do is reseal the caravan where it's leaking in.
It is better to leave the polystyrene attached to the aluminium and yes just replace the board that is rotten.
Once you have taken off the vynl you will be surprised how much it dries out.
you should be able to see where the wettest bits are to see where its leaking in.
The awning rails a most suspect and need to be removed clean off the old mastic get some 25mm mastic tape and tubes of loose mastic put the tape on the rail and the loose on the van if your lucky it will screw back on you might have to use longer screws to find some solid wood.
I am trying to simplify what is quite a labour intensive job.
Im assuming my answer will get to you, dont use the grey mastic on awning rails.get some proper sealant for caravans that does not set hard and pipe it on .put some in the screw holes aswell.wipe off excess and job done
------------- i dont sell cheap tat.I sell tat cheap
thanks Gerona
I have looked at a number of the members websites and photos which are really helpful, but im fairly sure Im in the deep do do
ive ordered mastic some suggested using caravan sealant with it.
also saw caravan roof paint sealant - have you used this before?
yes theres masses to do on the outside. am worried ill get all off and not be fit to get it on again so am ordering a cover - it is Ireland after all and the garage is just slightly too small to fit it in.
hi glittering prize it was toolate iid bought the w4 mastic sealing strip - its grey I read on wizard and another rblog that you put it on with silkaflex each side?
I live In not so sunny northern Ireland so the caravan needs to go inside now for me to tackle this job,
I want to gather all the materials so we can work once we get her in
so I need to ask you all
I can only find 5mm plywood or 3mm hardboard not 3.5mm ply as you all talk off its just not available here
so would 3mm hardboard be suitable its less rigid but surely once it goes on to what is now the bare polystyrene and strut surface it will be strong? I don't want to buy it if marine ply is really what is needed but its so pricey!
