I have a space saver spare wheel and tyre in the boot of my car. It is unused since the car was new in 2009. I dread the thought of having a puncture. Not only would I hate having to drive on such a thin tyre but at that age there is a good chance it is not safe. I certainly wouldn't want to use it while towing a caravan. The only alternative is to buy a new wheel and tyre...maybe it could be fitted to the underside of the caravan?

You will need a spare for the caravan as well of course...so that's two wheels and tyres you will be carrying around as ballast

If there is nothing in car handbook to say you can't, then you can. Ensure you check spacesaver pressure as often as your road tyres & follow instructions for use, ie 50mph max speed usually.

However, with full size spare you can just change it & continue journey as normal so a full size spare is better in all circumstances, not just towing.

Space savers should be BANNED!

Hate the damn things, had to use one once on a Mondeo - never again!

None of this eco weight saving malarkey, should be a full size tyre!

Even worse, her lease car only comes with a can of that gunk stuff.

What happens if you have a proper tyre destroying blow out?

The breakdown people will be properly cashing in to stranded motorists!

For those of us of a certain age changing a wheel is no worse than checking the oil. At some stage a roadside puncture changed from a 20min diy job to a major situation involving breakdown callout & possible uplift of car. I think to many drivers today a diy wheelchange is something that does not even figure on their radar.

A tyre fitter gave me the advice that if towing,if a rear puncture occurs, swap a front tyre to the back and put the spacesaver on the front.
Twice the work, but his reasoning was, when towing, to avoid the high loading on the puny very high pressure Spacesaver, and the likelyhood that you will feel the change in handling when its on the front so you WILL keep your speed down !!
No idea if this has any actual merit to it,and on a dark wet windy night it would be asking a lot to double the work !

That's alright if you have a jack and wheel brace, my daughters has neither or a spare.Just has a compressor and a tube of sealant, so on a sidewall puncture you've no choice but to call the recovery.

If you have a conventional spare then the punctured tyre can be repaired for about £10.

It is not recommended to repair a tyre when a can of foam has been used in it, therefore it will cost you the price of a new tyre plus a replacement can of foam which can be around £40-£50 depending upon the make of ar.

I towed my caravan from Looe to Ilfracombe with a space saver wheel without any problems at all, if the load index on the tyre is of the correct spec then it's fine

The maximum speed you can generally do with a spacesaver is 50mph. Obviously keep below that speed when towing.

I certainly would not put it on the front, especially with a front wheel drive car.

Why should a caravan make much difference at all? The tow hitch weight is about 75kg, that is less than 40kg on your spacesaver tyre, peanuts really considering there is already over 400kg on that tyre.

As for keeping a full size spare in the caravan, I really could not be bothered with the faff. In 50 years of driving I've only once ever had a tyre that was too badly damaged to enable re-inflating the tyre with a tyre pump as a get home remedy.
