I'm curious - I'm sure I can't be the first person to have considered this!

I have a 1999 caravan that has a Fanmaster 4000 which has long since given up the ghost. I'm just curious has anybody replaced their old gas heater with a simple electric alternative? The space is around 49 X 48cm. Anybody out there fitted something to replace their heater without the £300 cost of a proper caravan heater!

I know people will say use a fan heater - I always have but suddenly had the urge to try and put something better in and just wonder if anybody out there has found a relatively cheap electrical alternative to fit their ageing caravan!

While it may seem cheaper/easier to replace the 4000 with say a domestic type electric heater, come selling time the lack of a proper heating system will effect the selling price. I might add here, the 4000 along with it's brother the 5500 being the best of the lot!
So £300 is not going to buy a brand new replacement unless very basic but perhaps reasonable for good secondhand.

It is though a lot more than I've ever charged for the full overhaul of your fire?!

It's a smart looking heater but I got the van second hand and it had already had multiple modifications inside to repair it. Then when I had my motor mover fitted they had to disconnect the blown air to get it in the right place.

The van is pretty old so the resale value will be pretty low anyway. It just surprises me that you can't get a cheap heater that basically would fit the space. I think I've given up on the idea now though and will stick with my fan heater and oil filled radiator!

Well i can understand where you coming from then, 'multiple repairs' are expensive and sounds to me like you've had parts/brackets physically breaking?

Yeah there had been an alternative fan fitted to the back with a manual switch and the control for the heater didn't work. Looking inside both the heating elements had snapped too!

I have an even older caravan which is fitted with a gas heater. I have checked that the flue isn't blocked and checked it for gas leaks, and all seems ok. It works just fine, but we still find it easier to use a fan heater. I might think differently if we went on a site without EHU, but usually we don't.

Best Regards,
Colin

I'm sticking with a fan heater - only need it for the early and late part of the year. The rest of Spring and summer is warm enough!

Guessed as much, not sure about fan but typical vibration damage from out of balance wheels and perhaps aided by over inflated tyres!
