Looking highly likely that we're going to have to put a new axle on the van!! Only brought it in October and used it once 😤😤

Had it serviced Saturday and we discovered the hub nuts wound up so tight they won't come off and more than likely the bearings have welded themselves to the stub.

My question is, would anyone go for a second hand one with parts warranty on it, or would you buy new?? We are looking between £4-500 plus labour for a new one, but I can get one from a breakers from around £250.

Not sure the best way to go and just looking to see what others would do.

You can always test at breakers before you buy for free rotating and any play top to bottom if off correct chassis for your van IE Alko or BWP.    you should be able to get one use nuts off by drilling through depth of nut on one flat then split. Don't worry about bearing as they will need replacing. Two new nuts two bearings twospacers about £60 if stubs shafts ok if you can do your self.

speak to bpw or elddis, I cant remember if you can simply unbolt a stub axle and replace that, just replacing a complete axle is a right pain of a job and ideally needs a ramp to do it.

drilling the exiting one shot nut out isnt a bad idea, get some good drill bits and take it nice and slow, with luck your existing stub axle wont be too bad and will clean up. as regards the bearings, any garage with a hydraulic press will be able to fit them

I have fitted lot's of new stub axles the problem could be getting hold of one as the manufacturers only like to sell them to the trade.
But as Alan said you should be able to remove the one shot nut using a similar method if the bearing is siezed on the shaft.

Tried bpw, they don't sell the stub axles as individual sides. Everyone I've spoke to have give me the same price. £703 delivered with a 4-5 week wait in time. There is a breakers yard by me who have just quoted me £100 for a complete axle unit with a 3 month parts warranty on it. Would any of you guys go for that or throw caution to the wind and go new??

I did warn you they dont like to sell to the public.
If your going to get a full axle why dont you throw caution to the wind and ask a local garage to remove or at least loosen it for you.
The bearings can be broken off easily if the inner race is stuck on the shaft grind a flat on it going as close to the shaft as possible then wack it with a sharp chisel where you have ground it hey presto off they come.
Only if the threads are completely stripped should you contemplate changing the whole axle.

Gents, with respect to finding it difficult to get hold of stub axles for caravans..

We can custom build stub axles for you & will indeed sell to the general public.
