Sounds like you need the socket and light units apart to trace the fault.
Check the earth first. Check the socket on the car is providing the power. You can get plug in testers quite cheaply.

When we had a Disco there was no light when connecting caravan but a green light trailer symbol when indicating.I would first of all check motor socket as often wet gets in and they corrode at connections inside.

Certainly the green light (with the Trailer symbol ) should only come on when indicating and should flash in time with the green 'Arrow ' symbol.
As above, you have got some dirt or a loose wire somewhere, probably in the black socket or plug.

replace the plug on the van, i have gotten to the stage with the boss' various exploits it is pointless faffing about cleaning up contacts etc when a new plug is only a couple of quid
