Hi sorry if this is the wrong place or if this has already been answered elsewhere. I'm relatively new to forums and very new to caravanning. Here goes. I have recently purchased a 1992 abi marauder, the only lights in the van only run on the battery as does the water pump. I am wanting to know if I can install a charger in the van so when I'm using ehu, I don't need to worry about running out of light or running water. I have been trying to research this on my own but can't seem to find a definitive answer. So I guess I'm wanting to know if such a charger exists? (I'm sure it does). Where can I get this? And how would I wire it in? My van has an rcd with 2 breakers on the board one 5 amp one 10 amp. Should I install a 3rd breaker? A lot of questions I know I do apologise, hopefully someone out there can help me. Thank you in advance

eBay "caravan charger" lots of choice.

What is running off the existing 5A breaker, fridge? In many vans the 5A breaker serves both fudge and charger.

In a 1992 caravan with RCD and electrical breakers I would have thought that there would an onboard charger installed as standard as there was on my old 1992 Coachman. You can check with a voltmeter (when connected to EHU) by removing the two battery terminal connectors (make sure they don't make contact otherwise it will blow a fuse) and check to see if there is a 13 volt current being distributed which if there is then that is evidence that the battery will be receiving a charge. However, there may be an isolation rocker switch that illuminates when switched on adjacent to the charger to active the charger.

On my old compass 1990 I didn't think it had on board charger but on close inspection it was bolted underneath the van charger/transformer and had a small inline fuse inside the van hope u get sorted

The rcd and breakers I'm assuming have been installed later as the cables are brown blue. I'm at work at the moment so I'll get the multimeter on it when I get home. Hopefully you're right and it's already got a charger, which saves me a job. If that is the case sorry for wasting your time.

There's no such thing as wasting time 'Arjayuu' as that's how we all learn and never stop learning. That's the benefit of having a forum like this especially for novices.
10 years ago when I first started caravanning I was in exactly the same situation whereby I didn't even know what the two basic switches were for (water pump and battery condition gauge) or even how to operate the stabiliser. After initially reading the Caravanning Handbook for further knowledge, hands on experience and advice from others I have learned a lot over that time but still learning and gaining knowledge all the time.

Another way of checking if the battery is being charged is to disconnect the mains from the caravan by turning off the main circuit breaker. Connect a voltmeter across the battery and turn on something like a light to put a load on the battery, then turn the mains back on. The voltmeter should rise slightly and the light may even get a little brighter. If that happens you know your battery is charging.

If you find you don't have a charger they are easy to fit. Our caravan is older than yours and it has a Zig CF9 unit, which is a charger and control unit combined. There are usually plenty of these or similar on ebay.

Best Regards,
Colin

I've tested and looked all over in our caravan but no charger I'm sad to say. So I'm after a charger that keeps the battery charged whilst hooked up to ehu. Shouldn't have a problem fitting it but can I connect it to an existing breaker (5a or 10a) or get a new board with a 3rd breaker on it?

The usual caravan chargers don't draw that much current, so I would connect it to an existing breaker. I would try and get hold of a built-in unit such as a Zig unit.

This is the one I have;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Zig-CF9-charger-spares-or-repair-/162095242804?hash=item25bda11e34:g:p34AAOSwOVpXVYnd

But the one you have found looks like it would do the job too.
