Hi

We went off in our new toy over the half term. Great time, but the kettle tripped one of the RCDs. It reset after several attempts, then the kettle tripped it again on the next brew-up. Nothing unexpected there (my fault for buying a fast-boil kettle); what WAS unexpected is that the RCD refused to reset at all afterwards, even when I tried it with EHU disconnected. The switch that's gone AWOL seems pretty 'hair-trigger' by feel (ie, not much finger pressure at all required to manually trip/reset it). One of the others is not much better, the third takes a solid amount of pressure to click it either way (with a solid 'thunk'). As I've tried it with no power to the van to cause a trip/prevent a reset, is it likely I have a defunct RCD box?

Annnnd another thing... with no leccy getting to the Thetford fridge, I went to fire it up on gas. This worked fine outside our house as a tester before we left, with the red line tipping into the green on the 1st attempt, and staying there when I took my thumb off the temperature selector. Not this time! To start with, the fridge fired up and the line went to the green zone no problem. However, releasing the pressure on the temp dial caused it to switch off again. So I tried again. Same thing. And that's how it went until I gave up. Giving it another bash later on, there was no sign of life at all, not a flicker on the green dial/red line. The cooker/hob next to the fridge works fine, as does the Truma heater (which had also lost it's mains due to the aforementioned rogue RCD); all the internal gas selection valves are in the same 'on' position.

Despite only having half our mains leccy sockets working and no fridge, we STILL had a great time mooching around York and Fountain's Abbey. We finished off each day with a BBQalike, cooked on our ultra pricey electric griddle plate, powered by the (still working!) external socket and bought from the York Aldi for 30 quid. A cold beer would have been welcome though...

I'd appreciate any advice to help us have an even better time (ie, with our broken bits working) on our next trip in a couple of weeks.

Thank you

Glad to hear that you managed to have a great time despite all the setbacks.

It sounds to me like the RCD has failed internally so a new one should fix that, plus a lower wattage kettle to prevent a recurrence.
The fridge problem sounds like a duff thermocouple, the flame failure device, another replacement should fix that too. However when working with mains electrics and/or gas, it's probably best left to the experts.

Dave.

I have had difficulty lighting gas fridges in the past if not completely level. Could it be that?

I would check the wattage of that griddle if I were you. We looked at one in Aldi about 2 months ago and it would have overloaded the amp capacity of the hook up when used at the same time as anything else. You don't want to cause any more damage!

Will it reset after unplugging the hookup lead for at least 20 minutes? Reset whilst unplugged and make sure its cold also.

Overload can heat them up and they may not reset when still warm. Although tripping it with an overload several times may have damaged it.

They are fairly cheap but you need to work out all the wattages of your electric items.

Thanks for your replies.

Rapidoguys, I set up using a spirit level at both sites we were at when I tried the fridge on gas. Out of pure curiosity, I've just tried it again as it is now, just parked outside the house - unlevelled. And it's just fired up fine and kept going this time! I'm going to leave it running on gas for the day to see if that settles it down, as the van hadn't been used since last season when we bought it a few weeks ago. Do caravans sulk when they change hands? Or develop a warped SOH? Good point re the griddle, I'll check. It didn't trip when we (I) did 3 meals on it though - if it was going to do anything, wouldn't it just trip the switch before it caused any damage? I will make sure no other heavy-duty mains equipment is used whilst it's being used though.

Grampian91, I've tried to reset the switch since we got back, without hook up. So a totally cold and dead system. It still wouldn't have it, so I've got a replacement on the way.

Fingers crossed!

Fired my fridge up on gas a couple of weeks ago and ran it while I washed the van with no problem.

Tried it Monday when we were on site for a night, and it started after a few attempts. Checked the indicater after filling the water system and nothing.. after several attempts at restarting it, I gave up.
A blast with canned air has worked previously but not this time.

Going to give it another go tomorrow.. vans back in storage.

For reasons that I do not understand, if you overload an electric hook up cable it apparently may not necessarily trip the breaker but parts of the circuit can overheat causing gradual damage and a fire risk. But it's not an area of my expertise.

Hi there, just a few tips to help you along the way with your electrics
An rcd is a device that will trip due to a short cicuit on the wiring or a faulty device you are using.Depending on the age of your van it will usualy trip the whole supply on the van.It works by checking the balance current on two coils and will not trip on overload. They are rated in milli amps and disconnect the power very quickly should they see a fault. They always have a TEST BUTTON
An mcb sometimes called trip switches will operate on overload and short circuit but not as quick as an rcd on short circuit. They are thermal and can fault if they have been tripping .If a circuit has been tripping you have to either clear the fault or check to see if you are overloading the circuit. They are all rated ie 6A 10A 16A ect .That is the current designed to protect the cicuit. They can be replaced and cost around £6 .
In a caravan it it quite easy to oveload cicuits as even the supply can sometimes be only 6 or 10a on the older sites.
A simple way to check if you are overloadind without too much calculating is to use
        4 AMP =1KW
ie if you plug in a 3KW kettle that cicuit is taking 12 AMP and everything you use has a rating
A good rule of thumb is if it involves heating of any kind it will use quite a lot of juice.
To confuse things a little more you can now buy a device for your fuseboard called an rcbo which is a combination of an rcd and an mcb quite expensive not sure if these are fitted in newer caravans
Hope this helPs   GCB
