I was checking my fridge on gas at the weekend and although it worked there was a horrible acrid fume smell in the caravan.
Having done a bit of searching it seems that the burner might need a clean.
There are posts that say this but not how to go about it.
Is this something that can be done by the owner without having to remove the fridge and before calling in a service guy?
If so does anyone know what steps to follow?
That is shocking. A gas test should be carried out before you touch an appliance and when reinstalled.
Fridge is also a room sealed appliance and needs to be sealed when it goes back in.
Also if you have an original n80 burner you will need a new one asoriginals are mild and rust up. New ones are stainless.
I see dangerous tinkering with appliances on a daily basis and find it unreal that in a caravan and motorhome people will mess with things and put lives at risk.

The smell you describe could be leaking coolant & if this is the case the fridge will fail soon & will need replacing. On some installations the burner is accessible from outside the caravan by removing bottom fridge vent. clean burner with meths & small brush & blast with airline if you can.
It seems to work ok on electric without the smell, so fingers crossed its not the coolant as a new fridge looks expensive.
Would cleaning the burner be something that could be done without removing the burner, i.e. without disconnecting the gas pipe?
If so I could do this in the first instance to see if it helps before having to get someone in to check and/or replace the burner if not needed.
