Help!
i have an old freedom caravan with the classic eroded lining problem. I want to do it up and feel I have the general skills to do so.
Anyone done this?
Can anyone advise?
Many thanks
Ok, I'm going to start this next week.
I'm going to post pictures as I go. I've read here to use veltrim and a heat resistant spray adhesive.
Also read about replacing screws with stainless steel ones and to check for any leaks and seal with sealant.
Can anyone help with where I should start? What are the cupboards and interior screwed to? Will they be happy to be screwed back to whatever it is?
Please feel free to give any advise as I go and to follow the progress! I need lots of encouragement.
Very busy couple of days!
Day one.
Gave caravan exterior a good clean
Day two.
Removed all furniture.
Shifted stubborn screws with a squirt of WD40 and a bit of a tap with a hammer and they shifted! Sellotaped all screws to a piece of card and labeled where they came out of as I went.
Photographed every stage.
Day three.
Removed all interior lining, removed old foam and glue very successfully with a very stiff wire brush.
Removed vinyl flooring. Hoovered up!
Electrics need deciphering and a good sort out. Need to decide if gas heater gets binned. Need to decide if leisure battery totally necessary, as we are always on a site with hook up. And have only got tow bar with one socket, not one with leisure battery charger.
The weird thing is that once I took the fittings apart and came to the electrics etc I found that the battery wasn't connected, which means it's not been connected for 4 years. Very odd, as I had a complete service two years ago!?
The lights and the water pump have worked within that time frame! Although they don't right now!
I'll start by getting the battery tested to see if it has any life in it......
I take it you've found 'The Fix it Club' and Wizards caravan repairs - my bible lol
But - what is 'the classic eroded lining problem'?
I've a compass with damp issues in the back wall, I resealed every rail a few years ago but didn't stop the ingress! I've stripped the wall down to the skin and found the alloy has holes in it, so I'm now trying to work out the best way to patch so I can rebuild it.
What is 'veltrim/easyliner'? I'm assuming, as youre talking about colour, they're for recovering the wall boards once youre done? I'm a long way off being anywhere near done lol
Encouragement - knowing you'll have your own personalised holiday home, and everything will have been done properly. Your testament to it having been serviced but the battery isn't connected to anything says a lot about professional services! Well done for giving your Freedom a new lease of life
It seems old freedoms always have the lining eventually come away from the fibreglass. The foam disintegrates.
No, I haven't found the fix it club? Where is it? Nor wizards are these online resources?
Veltrim is a carpet for lining vans, easy liner is a stretchy version. From Harrison Trim supplies. It arrives today!
I will certainly know this van inside out when I'm done!
Are you familiar with Freedom caravans? Perfect for the DIY er, as all the parts are still available! I love Eastern European cunning!
No, I dont know much about Freedom caravans, other than they're quite small. I started out with a folding camper made by Dandy then, got caravans. First bought an old Adria & then upgraded to my Compass.
So tell me more about the Freedom construction. Other caravans have an alloy skin outer with wooden battens creating a frame inside to hold all the fittings. Theres a layer of polystyrene (or other solid) insulation covered with 3mm ply and a decorative vinyl - no carpet liner lol. I seem to remember looking around an Eriba which had 'furry' walls, I assume this was similar. Is it the outer skin on the Freedom that is Fibreglass? Is the lining stuck directly onto it or is there some sort of insulation in between?
This is a link to the "Fix It Club Directory" (if it works, I'm not good with technology lol It's a pinned post at the top of this Forum. Wizards page can be found in there, it was a 1990 Sprite he was repairing. It's a while since I visited every page on there so dont know if they all still work.
As to your electrics - can't help :( I can just about change a fuse/connect the battery but other than that I'm useless lol
You might be able to find the info in The Fix It Club
Hi. Help.... just purchased a Freedom microlite and wanted to know what insulation to use. Also what glue/adhesive will stick the insulation to the fibre glass one with out eating the fibreglass and two that will stick good. No good saying high temp one as this may contain something that eats the fibre glass. Then what adhesive will stick to the insulation to hold the veltrim in place. Also how does the rear and front end panels come off looks like mine is screwed half way down but stapled at the top???. Tnx
Can't help with the panels but these people will put you right as far as glue and stuff, it's the firm I got my stuff from and can highly recommend them.
Hi nutty camper,
Get the four way stretch liner from Harrison, as moppets dad said. They have the insulating liner too. The glue they recommend is not hot glue and won't effect the fibreglass at all. It's just called high temperature glue because it can withstand the heat differences that your caravan will experience without it effecting the glue.
Harrison will send you samples of the fabric.
