Topic: Patching The Skin

So .... have stripped the back wall out and found a LOT of corrosion holes in the skin. I'm going to patch with new aluminium sheeting on the inside (will seal with a reflective strip on the outside).

What grade/thickness aluminium would be the best to use?
What is the best adhesive to use?

Once the holes are repaired I can replace the battens and insulation :)

get some old beer cans or fizzy drink cans, flatten them out and attach using sika. the beer cans will be heavier duty aluminium than the van's skin

The thought had crossed my mind - but after drinking the beer from the amount of cans I'd need I dont think I'd be in any fit state to stick them anywhere lol

Seriously though, I was thinking about a flat sheet from Wickes or other local builders merchants? Then fixing with a polyurethane adhesive sealant - could use Sika 512

Had the same problem with my Coachman. Coated the inside using glassfibre mat and resin, on an area approx 2ft square.

Worked fine and been ok four years and counting.

Available in DIY quantities from any decent car accessory shop.

I had a lot of patch repairs to carry out on mines for the same reason. I used a laminating sheet, ran it through a laminator first for extra strength, cut to size greater than the hole. Then used soudal fixall high tac white between laminating sheet and hole, squeezed out excess using a small flat piece of wood. an this was used on the outside of the van. Only completed the job a few months ago and it's waterproof. Time will tell, confident as there is an amount of flex in both the laminating sheet and soudal that should compensate for flexing during transit. Cheap fix too. Advised by car body repair man than flexion in a caravan may break a repair that uses a fibreglass / rigid approach.
