Hi guys, I don't know if you can help me or not but I will ask anyway :-)
We have a trailer tent which we havent been able to get out this year as the weather hasn't been on our side at all, my idea is we sell the trailer and buy a caravan as at the end of the day you can still go away if it is raining as you don't have to worry about beds etc getting wet whilst putting it up.
So we have a very low budget to buy on :-(
We have seen a ABI Jubilee Emperor Caravan 1991 for a very reasonable price but it has damp. I am awaiting a reply from the seller as to how bad and where the damp is and have they located the leak etc.
Now my question is, would it be worth it to buy it and have a project in the winter months so it will be ready for us next season? Any thought, help or advice is more than welcome.
If the damp is visible, the true effect will be many, many times worse when you start stripping it back. The seller may tell you how much damp he thinks there is (and even believe it), but be very, very careful.
Most 25yr old caravans will have some damp unless they have had plenty of tlc from previous owner. It depends how bad it is. You really you need to go & see it & have a good look yourself.
If there is plenty of serious discolouration of interior wall boarding & soft bits down around wall/floor join then it's probably too far gone so leave it but if interior seems sound then sealing of exterior beading using PU18 or similar polyurethane sealant should give it a few more years. Also check all 4 grab handles. If they are loose it suggests rotted wood underneath.
This is the quick, bodge fix. Choose a warm dry day. Clean all exterior beading & awning rail with meths & run beads of PU18 around all seams. Also seal around grab handles & run sealant inside exterior window rubbers with windows wide open. 2 cartridges of sealant should be sufficient.
The 'proper' way of fixing damp is to remove exterior beading & strip out interior boarding & so on but life is probably too short for that if you just want to go caravanning.
You also need to budget for 'chassis service' which is brakes/wheelbearings/hitch & also new tyres if tyres are of uncertain age.
I have a similar age abi Jubilee Rallyman. Check under windows and Door for signs of softness. Currently repairing mine as two windows and door had rotting wood.
Otherwise sound (I think!)
