Hi Gang, just a quick question......
I have just bought a Sterling Eccles Jewel 2003, the fuse-box electrics is an ESM2000.
when this charges the battery does it turn it's self off when the battery is full or does it continue to charge.
The reason I ask is, I put the 240v electrics on and turned the fridge onto 240v had a look around, gave the in-laws a tour, then left the van over night with the 240v still on and running as I have done with my three other vans trouble free. When I went to it this morning there was a burning smell....on further investigation it turned out to be a very very hot battery.

Although I shall book it in to the service people to be checked over I thought I give you my dear friends a brain bashing.

A very hot battery is bad news as its probably damaged beyond repair, you need to get it checked, it may just be the battery was duff anyway, do you know how old it is?

These chargers were prone to failure.A company called Apuljack repair them, or do as my friend did with his 2005 caravan, replace it with the latest Sargent charger which Swift now fit. There were so many failed over time, is the reason Swift changed.

Hi pickeled Onion, I don't know! It was on the van when I bought it on Saturday (24tth September 2016).
Is the ESM2000 Supposed to cut out when the battery is charged? I've left the 240v on my bailey and never had this happen.

Hi Birdman 101. Do these Sargents have the same fittings as the EMS2000

As far as I know they have.My friend usually came along to me with his problems and when I diagnosed his problem he bought the new charger and fitted it himself. Not being electrically minded at all I am sure he would of been along to see me if it was not straight forwards.

Phone number on link or send message and they will be able to advise. They are very good, any problem i have had they have sorted

As Pickled Onion says, it is far more likely to be a faulty battery. If the charging unit has failed it would cease to charge, not overcharge.
In all probability the battery is the same age as the caravan -- there will be a manufacture date on it somewhere.

As birdman says, there have been loads of battery charger failures. It is a separate unit in the electrical unit and can be swapped fairly easily, I fear the battery may well be duff by now. It's the old 'chicken & egg' situation, which went faulty first?

Hi Franita, I've just bought a Sterling Eccles Topaz 2002. It's got the ESM2000 like your van. I've tried every conceivable combination of the switches but can't get power to the fridge when towing. Could you advise please.

Thanks

Is this your first caravan or a replacement as the fault could be in the 12S plug or socket?

Hi Vinrouge,
the ONLY advise I can give you is this,

The black switch has to be on "CAR" and the Orange switch has to be "OFF" and the fridge has to be on the battery icon. but the car will only charge when the engine is running.

On my van there is NO indication as to whether the fridge is running or not on the 12v or 240v.
Gas is the Only one I get an indication and thats when the gas is NOT lit and then the neon light flickers

Unfortunately I'm NO expert and can't give you any other advise because I'm in the same boat as you. I paid to have my towbar and electrics professionally fitted, I know the reverse lights work which are on the 12s because I can test and see that, but because I haven't travelled far enough as yet, I don't know whether the fridge is working or not.
regards Frank

Everyone Please accept my apologies.

I had so much going on with the van changing roof vents and generally tidying it up. after reading the posts about my battery being at fault I did buy a new battery and everything is working as it should do.

I forgot to thank everyone. I've even gone and brought a 50 watt solar panel which is doing just great.

again Really SORRY..
Regards Frank

Hi Franks, Thanks for info. Sounds like your set-up is exactly like mine. Everything in the van works on 12, 240 or gas. Have tested both black and grey electrics from car and confirmed power OK to everything. Only prob' is getting the fridge cold while towing.

Going away end of next week and will put switches as per your suggestion. Will stop after an hour to see if that works, if not will try different combination. . Fingers crossed!

Cheers,

Jack

I usually start our fridge on 240v the day before we go so the 12v only has to keep it cold which is easier than getting it cold

Good idea, but I'd need a 1 mile electric cable as the van is stored away from home.
