Arrived at campsite to find that both cables in half after dragging on road. A quick repair to black cable got my lights working but when it came to the grey after connecting wires together with electric connectors the alko hitch would not activate my only idea is the fuse has blown but where is located no idea any clues please

My ATC fuse is located near the positive car battery terminal. Damage like this is fairly common and replacement cables can be easily obtained.

Cable damage can be avoided if the cables are position over the TOP of the hitch and then plugged in rather than dangle below where they can drop onto the road surface. It was a lesson learned for me being a newbie about 10 years ago but I was lucky to detect it whereby only the insulation had disappeared so a wrap around with insulation tape saved the day. I then used a bungee cord to hold up the cables till an experienced caravanner explained the simple solution. Just thought it was worth passing on the information as it can save on expensive repair bills.
The 12 volt fuses should be located somewhere behind the battery box under the seat which should be for the fridge and the charging circuit.

Another tip is to twist a couple of turns into the cables before inserting them into their sockets, it lifts them a little. However I now do as tango55 suggests by routing them through the Alko hitch handles.

Any luck with the ATC fuse, is it in the engine compartment near the battery or added to your in-car fuse box?

Dave.

No problem Pete, just glad that you got it sorted. The ATC draws a fair few amps even when doing a self-test, is the supply at the lights up to it? I ran a separate supply wire all the way to the battery.
